Zoho Books vs QuickBooks for Indian SMEs in 2026: What Is Actually Available

Published on October 22, 2026

Search for Zoho Books vs QuickBooks and most of what comes back was written for a market QuickBooks has left. For an Indian business in 2026 this is not a feature comparison between two live products. Intuit stopped selling QuickBooks Online in India in 2022 and switched it off for Indian subscribers in 2023. The real questions are what a business still holding QuickBooks data should do with it, whether the overseas editions are a workable route, and what replaces QuickBooks for GST, e-invoicing and Indian bank feeds.

For an Indian business in 2026, Zoho Books is the practical choice between the two, because QuickBooks Online is no longer available in India. Intuit ended new Indian sign-ups in July 2022 and closed access for Indian subscribers in 2023. The overseas editions of QuickBooks are built for other countries' tax systems and do not file GST returns, generate e-invoices or e-way bills, or handle Indian TDS. QuickBooks still matters in one situation: when a foreign parent keeps its group books on it and the Indian subsidiary has to report into it.

What happened to QuickBooks in India

Intuit's own India page is unambiguous. New sign-ups to QuickBooks in India ended in July 2022. Existing subscribers kept access for a transition period, and access for Indian customers ended in 2023. The withdrawal covered every subscription and service: QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Online Accountant, the QuickBooks mobile app and QuickBooks Time. Intuit said it could no longer deliver and support products that met the needs of small businesses and accountants in India, and pointed users to government-approved alternatives.

So if a comparison you are reading prices QuickBooks in rupees or describes a QuickBooks GST module, it is either out of date or describing a product you cannot buy. For an Indian business choosing now, the realistic shortlist is Zoho Books and Tally Prime;Zoho Books vs Tally Prime covers that decision.

Can an Indian business use the US or UK edition?

Technically, someone in India can subscribe to an overseas QuickBooks edition with a foreign card and address. In practice it fails on three counts.

  • Indian compliance is missing. The overseas editions handle US sales tax, UK VAT and similar regimes. They do not prepare GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B, fetch GSTR-2B, generate an Invoice Reference Number through the Invoice Registration Portal, raise e-way bills, or compute TDS by section. Every one of those would have to be done outside the ledger, which defeats the point of accounting software.
  • The books may not meet the Companies Act. Rule 3 of the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014, as amended in August 2022, requires a company's electronic books to remain accessible in India at all times and to be backed up daily on servers physically located in India. Where the service provider is outside India, the company must also report its details to the Registrar every year. A foreign-hosted subscription that Intuit does not support for Indian businesses is a weak position to defend in an audit.
  • Nobody supports it for you. Intuit does not sell or support these editions to Indian businesses, and Indian bank feeds and payment gateways are not built for them.

We do not set up Indian entities on overseas QuickBooks editions, and we advise clients who have done so to move.

GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills: why this is the deciding factor

For most Indian SMEs the accounting software is, first, the system that produces the GST return. A business above the e-invoicing threshold cannot issue a B2B invoice without an IRN, and a trader moving goods above the e-way bill limit cannot dispatch without one. When those are generated from the same invoice that posts to the ledger, the sales register, GSTR-1 and the e-invoice data agree by construction. When they are produced in a separate tool, someone reconciles three sets of numbers every month.

This is where the comparison ends for an Indian entity. Zoho Books does this natively; QuickBooks, in any edition you can buy, does not. Our Zoho Books GST setup guide covers the configuration, and filing GST returns on Zoho Books covers the monthly routine.

Where QuickBooks still comes up: the foreign parent

The one place we still meet QuickBooks is in groups with a parent in the US, UK, Australia or elsewhere that keeps its own books on QuickBooks Online and wants the Indian subsidiary in the same system. The answer is not to put the Indian company on QuickBooks. It is to keep the Indian books on Zoho Books, where GST, TDS and the Companies Act requirements are met, and to report into the parent each month:

  • Map the Indian chart of accounts to the parent's chart once, and keep the mapping under version control.
  • Close the month in Zoho Books, lock it, and export the trial balance in the parent's account structure and currency.
  • Reconcile inter-company balances both ways before the parent consolidates. Differences here are the usual cause of late group closes.
  • Keep transfer pricing documentation and FEMA reporting on the Indian side, on the Indian financial year.

This is a standard part of our outsourced accounting services for foreign-owned companies.

Moving old QuickBooks data to Zoho Books

Most businesses that left QuickBooks in 2023 exported what they could before access ended. What you can do now depends on what you saved.

  • If you have Excel or CSV exports of the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, items and open invoices and bills, these can be cleaned and imported into Zoho Books, with opening balances struck at a cut-off date.
  • If you have only PDF reports, the opening position is rebuilt from the last reconciled trial balance and the party-wise ledgers, and open invoices are loaded one by one so that ageing works from day one.
  • Either way, agree the GST input credit carried forward to the electronic credit ledger on the portal, and TDS receivable to Form 26AS, before you treat the opening balances as final.
  • Keep the old exports for the statutory retention period. They are the only record of the QuickBooks years.

If those QuickBooks years were later re-entered in Tally, the cleaner route is usually from Tally; our Tally to Zoho Books migration framework describes it. What the setup typically costs is broken down in Zoho Books implementation cost in India.

The verdict

For an Indian business there is no live contest. QuickBooks is not sold or supported here, and the editions that can be bought abroad do not do Indian GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills or TDS. Zoho Books does all of these, hosts Indian accounts in India, and gives your accountant a free login. The decision worth spending time on is not Zoho Books versus QuickBooks, but how Zoho Books is set up, and who keeps the books on it each month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is QuickBooks available in India in 2026?

No. Intuit’s India site states that QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Online Accountant, the QuickBooks mobile app and QuickBooks Time are no longer available in India. New sign-ups ended in July 2022 and access for Indian subscribers ended in 2023.

Can I use the US version of QuickBooks for my Indian company?

It is not a workable option. The overseas editions do not prepare GST returns, generate e-invoices or e-way bills, or compute Indian TDS, and Intuit does not support them for Indian businesses. Companies must also keep their electronic books accessible in India with a daily backup on servers in India.

What is the best QuickBooks alternative in India?

For most Indian SMEs and startups, Zoho Books, which handles GST returns, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS and Indian bank feeds from the ledger. Businesses with heavy inventory or manufacturing and an in-house accounts team may prefer Tally Prime.

Our parent company uses QuickBooks. What should the Indian subsidiary use?

Keep the Indian books on Zoho Books so that GST, TDS and Companies Act requirements are met, and send the parent a monthly trial balance mapped to its QuickBooks chart of accounts, with inter-company balances reconciled before consolidation.

How do I move my old QuickBooks data to Zoho Books?

Start from the last reconciled trial balance at a cut-off date. Import cleaned exports of accounts, contacts and items, load open invoices and bills individually, and agree GST credit and TDS receivable to the portals before finalising opening balances.
